Happy National Drink Wine Day!
First of all, let me acknowledge the elephant in the room… I’ve been celebrating ALL YEAR! I had no idea it was just to be celebrated on February 18th.
Aside from giving us a guilt-free reason to imbibe, National Drink Wine Day is a time to reflect on the health benefits of wine. When consumed in moderation, wine can reduce the risk of type II diabetes, heart attack, stroke, certain kinds of cancers, and liver disease. It can also lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) and boost the good cholesterol (HDL).
Disclaimer: When NOT consumed in moderation, it results in a terrible pounding headache and overall malaise.
Health Benefits
Some wines pack more health benefits than others. According to experts, Pinot Noir is the wine with the most health benefits. While red wines are generally considered to be healthier than white wines, Pinot Noir is the red wine that contains the most resveratrol, a plant compound that reduces cholesterol, prevents blood clots, and increases longevity.
Choosing the Right Wine Glass
Different glasses are used to enhance different aspects of wines. When choosing your wine glass, it’s best to first and foremost take bowl shape into consideration, matching the bowl to the type of wine. Then give consideration to stemmed or stemless and to the thickness of the rim. Do keep in mind, though, that all the guidelines about matching wine glasses to wines are simply that: Guidelines. Ultimately the best wine glass choice for any particular wine is the one in which the wine tastes best to you.
So in honor of National Drink Wine Day, let’s raise our glasses in a toast because a glass a day keeps the doctor away!
Am I right?
